Stripe in talks to buy OpenRouter for ~$10B

Stripe is negotiating to acquire AI model marketplace OpenRouter at roughly 7.7x its May valuation, a bet that routing belongs next to payments.
Stripe is in talks to acquire OpenRouter, the marketplace developers use to route API calls across hundreds of proprietary and open-weight models, in a deal that could value the startup near $10 billion, the Wall Street Journal reported July 23. That is roughly 7.7 times OpenRouter’s $1.3 billion valuation from a funding round just two months earlier, in May. Stripe itself was last valued at $159 billion.
The two companies already work together: OpenRouter uses Stripe to process customer payments, so a deal would fold a payments relationship into full ownership. For Stripe, buying OpenRouter would be its biggest and most direct move yet into AI infrastructure, sitting the company between developers and the model providers they call rather than just processing the invoices afterward. Reporting notes talks remain fluid, a final agreement could land soon, and other technology companies have also evaluated bids for OpenRouter.
For anyone building on OpenRouter, the practical risk isn’t the model catalog disappearing overnight, it’s pricing and roadmap priorities shifting once a payments company owns the routing layer. This lands the same week Cursor shipped its own model router and Runway launched one for generative media: routing is becoming infrastructure everyone wants to own, not just a convenience feature. Worth testing a second router as a fallback before any deal closes, especially if a meaningful share of spend runs through OpenRouter today.
Update, August 16: deal reportedly set at $7B+, below original talk of $10B
Bloomberg reported the acquisition terms have been finalized at just over $7 billion, down from the roughly $10 billion figure first reported in July, still around 5x OpenRouter’s $1.3 billion valuation from its May Series B. Neither Stripe nor OpenRouter has confirmed the deal; a Stripe spokesperson told TechCrunch the company “does not comment on rumors or speculation.” Treat the lower number as reported, not official, until one side confirms it, but the direction, a real price cut from the original talks, is the more useful data point for anyone modeling how this affects OpenRouter’s roadmap.
