Microsoft confirms a Copilot 'super app'

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella confirmed during the company’s Wednesday earnings call that Microsoft is building an AI “super app” combining Copilot’s chat, coding, and agentic capabilities into one product spanning “both consumer and commercial experiences,” launching this year. “Copilot is evolving rapidly from chat to Cowork to Autopilots,” Nadella said. “This quarter, we are bringing these Copilot experiences together, including code, in one super app.” The confirmation follows an earlier Fortune report that Microsoft was building an app blending its Copilot chatbot, GitHub Copilot, Copilot Cowork, and the agentic Autopilot system. Microsoft’s revenue reached $90 billion for the quarter, which Nadella attributed to AI and cloud growth; OpenAI recently shipped a comparable consolidation with its own ChatGPT Work app, which merges ChatGPT and Codex.

What it means for operators

Two of the largest AI vendors are independently converging on the same idea within weeks of each other: stop making users choose between a chat assistant, a coding tool, and an automation layer, and ship them as one product. If you’ve built workflows or training around today’s separate Copilot surfaces, expect some restructuring once the merged app ships, and watch whether Microsoft’s version keeps the same API and pricing boundaries or resets them.

The merge is now underway: Microsoft is combining the consumer Copilot app and Microsoft 365 Copilot into one app that handles both personal and work accounts, rolling out worldwide on mobile and web starting mid-August. By August 18, consumers lose access to Group Chats, AI-podcast creation, the experimental Copilot Labs tools, the Deep Research feature, and the animated Mico character; paid professional users get a replacement tool called Researcher in place of Deep Research, and stored files move to OneDrive. Microsoft EVP Jacob Andreou told staff in an internal memo that features need to earn “the right to exist” rather than stick around because they shipped. If your team uses any of the features on that cut list, especially Group Chats or Copilot Labs workflows, migrate off them before August 18 rather than after.
