Claude now works inside Google Docs, Sheets and Slides
If your team writes in Google Docs and models in Sheets, Claude can now edit those files in place, with an approval step on by default and no extra fee announced.
Anthropic has put Claude inside Google Docs, Sheets and Slides. Claude for Google Workspace is in public beta on all paid Claude plans; it opens as a sidebar next to the file you are working in, reads the doc, sheet or deck, sees what you have selected, and changes the file directly [1]. Android Authority lists the eligible plans as Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise [3]. At the same time Anthropic released Google Docs, Sheets and Slides connectors, also in beta, that let Claude create and edit Google files from the Claude chat itself [1][4].
For a small team that already lives in Google’s apps, this removes the copy-and-paste loop between a chat window and a document. It also means an AI model can now write into your working files, so the controls matter as much as the features.
Claude can now edit Google Docs, Sheets and Slides from a sidebar inside the file, and create or edit Google files from the Claude chat, in beta on every paid plan.
for you
If you pay for Claude and work in Google's apps, you can try it this week at no announced extra cost; keep the default approval mode on until you trust it with your files.
What was announced
There are two parts to the release, and they work in opposite directions.
The first is an add-on. You install Claude for Google Workspace from the Google Workspace Marketplace, open a file and go to Extensions > Claude > Open Claude, the company says [1]. One install adds Claude to all three apps [2]. Admins can deploy it to a whole domain or to selected groups from the Google Admin console [1].
What Claude can do differs by app. In Docs, Anthropic says Claude can fix a sentence or restyle a heading in place without touching the surrounding formatting [1]. For bigger rewrites it proposes edits as suggestion cards in the sidebar; each card highlights the passage it would change, and you apply or dismiss it [1]. The company’s example is asking Claude to tighten the executive summary of a product requirements document and turn the next steps into a table, both done directly in the doc [1].
In Sheets, Claude can write formulas, build pivot tables and native Sheets charts, and add new tabs [1]. For joins or data cleaning, it can pull a range into Python and write the results back into the sheet [1][4]. Anthropic’s example starts from an empty sheet: attach your source files, ask for a Q3 budget against actuals with a tab for each team and a summary chart, and Claude can flag anything over budget [1].
In Slides, Claude builds new slides from the deck’s existing layouts and themes so they match the rest of the deck, then checks its own work and flags elements that overlap, run off the slide, or are hard to read [1][4].
You choose how much Claude does without asking. In the default mode, “Ask before edits”, each change appears as an approval card with a summary and Claude waits for your approval [1]. In “Accept all edits” mode, Claude works through the task and applies changes without stopping [1][3].
The sidebar is not a cut-down Claude. When you are signed in with your Claude account, it has the same models, connectors and skills you use in Claude itself, according to [1]. Anthropic’s example is a quarterly business review deck that pulls account history from Salesforce and call notes through the Google Drive connector; save the format as a skill and the next person builds the same deck the same way [1]. On Enterprise plans, the Compliance API, customer-managed encryption keys and OpenTelemetry audit export apply to the add-on too [1].
The second part runs from Claude outward. With the new Google Docs, Sheets and Slides connectors, you can paste a Google file link into a Claude conversation, or ask for a new doc, sheet or deck, and on supported setups the file opens in a pane beside the chat [1]. Anthropic says starting from Claude makes most sense when you need a new file or your work spans several files [1]. Before this, Claude could reach Google Workspace content through connectors and work on files in Google Drive, according to [4].
What changed, and for whom
The plain change is where the work happens. Until now, using Claude on a Google doc meant asking in one tab and pasting into another, then fixing whatever formatting broke on the way; Android Authority describes exactly that loop as the friction the add-on removes [3]. Now the edit lands in the file.
The second change is competitive. VentureBeat points out that Google’s Gemini and Microsoft’s Copilot already offer similar editing inside their own office suites [4]. Android Authority frames the release as a direct move against Gemini inside Google’s own apps [3]. For a buyer, that means the decision about which assistant edits your documents is no longer tied to which company makes the documents.
Access is scoped. In Google Workspace, Claude sees only the file you open it in, plus any connectors you turn on, the product page says, and Google shows both permissions up front [2]. For the connectors, Claude’s access matches your existing Google sharing permissions [1]. On Team and Enterprise plans, an owner or primary owner has to enable the Google connectors before members can use them [1].
What is not public yet: the announcement gives no end date for the beta and no usage limits for work done through the sidebar [1], and no price separate from existing plans has been announced [4].
You can install the add-on now on any paid plan. Start with one low-stakes document and leave the default approval mode on, so every edit is shown to you before it is made.
See Claude's fact panel →Gemini already edits inside these apps. The question is now which model does better on your own documents, not which one is built in. Try the same task in both before paying for a second seat.
See Gemini's fact panel →Decide who may install the add-on before people install it themselves. Admins can deploy it to the whole domain or to selected groups, and on Team and Enterprise plans the connectors stay off until an owner enables them.

It suits people who already pay for Claude and spend most of the day in Google Docs, Sheets and Slides: a founder writing proposals, an operator building a monthly budget sheet, a consultant turning notes into a client deck. It also suits teams that have built skills or connectors in Claude, because those come with the sidebar [1].
It is less useful if your company runs on Microsoft 365, or if you do not pay for Claude; the add-on is for paid plans only [1]. If your documents hold data you cannot let an AI provider process, the enterprise controls Anthropic lists, including customer-managed encryption keys and audit export, are on Enterprise plans [1], so check what your own plan includes before turning it on.
Be careful with “Accept all edits”. It lets Claude work through a whole task without stopping [1]. That is convenient on a draft and risky on a shared file other people depend on. Google’s version history is your undo button; know where it is before you start.
This page will be updated if Anthropic publishes usage limits for the add-on, announces a price, or moves Claude for Google Workspace out of beta.
